Dollywagon
Steve, one of Real Adventures Instructors was out on Dollywagon today.
With stunning views all round they did central route grade iii, but more like iv at the mo.. turf frozen part way up, snow dry powdery and still unconsolidated, but definately getting there.. they also looked at Chock Gully, and all the routes on the crags.. all doable, just… but unconsolidated throughout, didn’t see any ice, the three easy gullies looked like a bit of fun…
Most of the ghylls along Thirlmere side of Helvellyn starting to freeze, (some ice and running water behind) so a few more days of this cold and there will be plenty of ice to play on low down..
Interestingly, they found a small avalanche that had happened on the walk back to the car, about 100m of slab slid down one of the open gullies, (Southish facing), some big blocks and a huge crack ran along the beck bank.. deeper than an arm and a pole together!! so be careful as you descend in the afternoons..
