Young people from Old Hutton Primary spent the first day of their residential finding their way to camp on a self led walk, followed by cooking on trangiers and setting up tents in the evening. Based at Low Gillerthwaite for the rest of the four days the 24 pupils went mountain walking, ghyll scrambling, canoeing, participated in team building initiatives and were supplied with lovely food by our chef Mark.

Zip Line Inspection
Today I headed over to inspect a Zip Line before we use it with one of our larger courses this year.
I was pleased to see that they had removed a suspect tree from the system…
Last year we did not use it due to concerns I had, its great to see recommendations taken forward and acted upon.
John Beatty
After seeing a slide show by John Beatty at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival I was hooked on his work.
He had 4 slide projectors glowing and merging onto one screen to produce a mix of images that where just outstanding.

MLTE Board Meeting
I stand as the AMI representative on the Mountain Leader Training England Board.
Today was the AGM and General Board meeting held at the BMC offices in Manchester.
South Barking Ghyll – Barbondale
During the November Floods a large boulder in a ghyll we regularly use with groups moved after a considerable amount of water washed away the smaller rocks and river bed that was pinning it in place. This boulder was then on the blink of moving down the ghyll and it was feared that if it moved it would crush anyone in the its path.
Attempts had been made to stabilise it but not to a sufficient extent that would satisfy us to be happy to stand underneath it whilst spotting our groups as they climb over it.
2 weeks ago Tom Redfern and I headed over there to move it but ran out of time, just as we where leaving the boulder decided to move with out us touching it and confirmed our concerns as to its stability.
Today I went back to South Barking Ghyll with Ingleborough Hall to complete the removal of the dangerous boulder. After a couple of taps with a large hammer the boulder split as predicted and fell down the ghyll and cracked into a further 2 pieces. This section of the ghyll is now safe for groups to climb past and minimal damage has been done.
Whilst I was there I popped up to the Key Hole in the upper part of the ghyll and removed a selection boulder that where blocking the smaller key hole, now you climb through both.
A good days work.
BMC Technical Committee Meeting
I stand on the BMC’s Technical Committee representing the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI).
This is a group of highly knowledgeable people ranging from metallurgists, engineers, manufactures, textile experts who are all climbers. The Aim of the group is to issue safety advice and investigate incidents of failed equipment.
Biannually the committee holds a conference at Plas y Brennin this year the theme is friction. There will be practical sessions in the morning and lectures + theory session in the afternoon with a speaker in the evening. Sportiva will be there demonstrating the friction of boots and Vibram rubber. Jim Titt from Bolt Products will be running a workshop on belay devices and rope friction through them and I have been invited to run a workshop on gip ‘a’ bility.
We all meet in Manchester at the BMC’s offices around 5 time per year.
